Organic farming: 3 youths show the wayStaff reporter
 GUWAHATI, Aug 6 – Use of inorganic fertilizers, inorganic pesticides etc increase the inorganic contents in the agricultural produces exposing people to various health hazards.

 To promote organic way of cultivation, three young men- Pankaj Kalita, Ranjan Sharma and Hiranya Joyoti Das together have launched Organic Innovation and have shown the way through cultivation of Stevia, a plant which has many health benefits.
“Stevia has many positive characteristics like – it is calorie free, a good antioxidant, good for diabetics, suitable for losing weight and maintaining healthy skin and safe for children too. It has been internationally accepted and even safer than available artificial sweetening agent,” said Pankaj adding that their group is ready to share expertise with interested farmers and would even market their produces.
It needs to be mentioned here that use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides has seen increase of diabetic patients and other ailments like high blood pressure, aches and pains, stomach problem, cancer, early aging etc.
“Organic cultivation can be converted in to a viable business,” said Pankaj.
Organic Innovation has joined with Sunrise Agriland Development and Research Pvt. Ltd to encourage Stevia cultivation organically in different parts of Assam.
Now-a-day’s in Diet Pepsi, Diet chocolate and in many confectionery items, drinks etc., Stevia is being used. Demand of Stevia is going up in both in domestic and international market, claimed Organic Innovation.
Senior scientist Dr Amal Roy said the need of the hour was to generate awareness about organic cultivation. “It is time we embraced organic farming to develop a healthy eco-friendly environment in our country. Farmers of New Zealand are benefiting from organic farming economically and socially and maintaining harmony in total environment profile. Assam should emulate New Zealand,” said Dr Roy.
Professor and Head Dr OP Gupta  of Assam Ayurvedic College Hospital said that inorganic substance gives birth to deadly diseases in our system. Director of Sunrise Agriland Development and Research Pvt. Ltd  Dr Atul Gupta said Stevia cultivation had a hopeful future.

Stress on organic farming and Stevia cultivation

GUWAHATI, Aug 4: “Use of inorganic fertilizers and inorganic pesticides increases the inorganic content in agricultural products which when consumed by human beings, gives rise to new diseases. In India, the incidence of diabetics, high blood pressure, ache and pains, stomach problem, cancer and early ageing is increasing at an alarming rate. This is where organic farming assumes importance,” said Dr OP Gupta, Professor and Head of the Assam Ayurvedic College and Hospital at a press conference in Guwahati today.
 Three youths – Pankaj Kalita, Ranjan Sharma and Hiranya Jyoti Das had started Organic Innovation to develop awareness among farmers on organic farming. Organic Innovation even extended help to the farmers for marketing their products. Organic Innovation then joined hands with Sunrise Agriland Development and Research Pvt. Ltd. started Stevia cultivation in different parts of Assam.
“Stevia is calorie free, a good antioxidant, good for diabetics, suitable for losing weight, maintaining healthy skin and safe for children also. It has also been internationally accepted as safer than the available artificial sweetening agent,” said Mr Universe Mahadeb Deka, who uses the organic products marketed by Organic Innovation.
Senior scientist Dr Amal Roy said, “In the Northeast, people are not too aware about organic products and their benefits. Hence the increasing number of diseases.  I hope that people understand and start organic farming to develop an eco-friendly enviornment in the country.”

The 4th World Stevia Organisation Conference was held in the heart of  Paris in May 24, 2012 at Hotel Millennium.

It was a huge success. This forth edition was interactive, rich and opened a new window to Stevia Applications and uses in Food & Beverage Industries.
The Science of Stevia: Recent Advances & Marketing
Many subjects were presented by speakers and scientific committee highlighted the recent researches on Stevia:
The Impact of Stevia on Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome was presented by Marvin Edeas, Chairman of International Antioxidants Society (ISANH), France. He also underlined the antioxidant activities of Stevia and Stevia Extracts on various models.
In this line, Yaroslav Schevchenko, University of Berlin, Berlin, Germany shown the influence of different Stevia Products on Antioxidants Activity of Green Tea Extracts. He presented the Best Combinaison of Stevia with Green Tea.
Concerning Metabolic Syndrome, WSO invited a PhD Student, Barbara Bugaj, University of Agriculture, Faculty Food Technology, Cracow, Poland and support her researches to present her studies about the Effect of Stevia Rebaudiana on Selected Biochemical Parameters in Experimential Rats.
The Miracle of Stevia and its all proprieties was presented by Jim May, CEO of Wisdom Natural Brands, USA. Mr May provided his vision and perspectives for stevia in the next years.
The technical aspects of the Eco-Extraction of Vegetal Matrices and mainly Stevia were presented by Giancarlo Cravotto, from University of Turin, Italy.
The conclusion of this session is that Stevia will play a strategic role to prevent many chronical diseases.
Latest Regulation Approval
Mrs Nicole Coutrelis, Lawyer at Coutrelis & Associés, Paris, France updated all European Regulation about Stevia & Stevia Extracts, and especially about their different status, their conditions of use and also how to indicate Steviol glycosides on the label.


Food & Beverages Formulation
The aim of this session was to discuss about the impact of formulation on Stevia taste and after-taste.
It is why WSO committee invited academics and industrials to present their innovations in this area:
To introduce this session, Gabriella Morini, from University of Gastronomic Sciences, Pollenzo – Bra, Italy discussed about the Myth or Reality of the Sweet Taste Receptor. The perspectives to activate and modulate these receptors were discussed.

The tasting procedure is, on the one hand, based on the sensory analysis such as the general taste of the product, the aroma, appearance, flavor, mouth feel or any other organoleptic criteria.
